Tax planning guide
Estimated taxes, in plain English
People with income that is not fully covered by withholding may need to make estimated tax payments during the year. Form 1040-ES is the IRS worksheet for estimating and paying individual estimated tax.
A sensible workflow
- Track income and expenses as they happen.
- Separate business activity from personal spending.
- Estimate annual income, deductions, credits, and tax.
- Compare withholding and prior-year obligations.
- Review the result with a qualified professional before paying.
Estimated tax planning is personal: filing status, other income, credits, withholding, state rules, and safe-harbor provisions can all change the result. A calculator on this site cannot determine what you owe.
Use the current IRS instructions rather than an old blog post, and keep a copy of each payment confirmation with your records.
